Preserving Berries: Fruit Leather
You may have learned that American Indians preserved wild berries by drying them in patties, but did you know that our European hunter gatherer ancestors did just the same thing? Berries of all kinds were important to survival, providing a boost of vitamins in the spring. Today there are products on grocery store shelves mimicking this ancient food, however they are not nutritious at all! Take for example “fruit roll ups” marketed to children. This product is full of fake flavors, fake colorings, and probably no real fruit at all! You can make your own fruit leather at home, providing a wonderful snack to take hiking, or camping. Complacency is poison, but a return to traditionalism is the antidote.
